The Energy Law Association Inc. is a non-profit incorporated society, which focuses on legal issues relevant to the energy sector and natural resources, in a wide sense. As such, its concerns include oil and gas, electricity, mining, minerals, water, and all issues of legal interest flowing from them. The Association does not, however, have an environmental focus. ELA was originally incorporated in 1984 as The Energy & Natural Resources Law Association Inc. and changed its name to The Energy Law Association in July 2002.
Regular lunch-time seminars are held on topics of current interest to energy law related companies and organizations.
Since its inception in 1984 the Association has endeavoured to assist with funding for scholarships to enable the research and writing in a suitable area of energy law. In recent years, ELA has provided funding for the following:
2007 Scholarship to Simon Consedine to assist in his post-graduate studies into energy law (undertaken in the U.S.)
2008 Scholarship to Phernne Tancock to attend the 32nd AMPLA National Conference.
2009 Scholarship to Catherine Kubs to attend the 33rd AMPLA National Conference.
ELA has also initiated a prize for the best paper at an AMPLA Conference. In 2009 this was awarded to John Grace for his paper on Joint Venture Agreements.
